Taiwan part two!
The second part of my journey on the island.

I went to a nice vegetarian restaurant and ordered this desert. Was the most expensive on the menu. Wasn't that special though it was pretty good.

While heading back I faced a massive line at the mrt.. Rush hour In Taipei.

I stopped for tea at taipei 101. Got this awesome iced fruit tea.

Taiwan Round 1

A couple days ago I decided I wanted to go to Taiwan. Booked last minute tickets. Flew out on March first. Got there, worked out in the hotel gym for a bit then headed out to explore the city.

Ximen at night.

Ximen is quite a cool area. It feels sort of like harajuku or shibuya or something. Maybe like Insadong in Korea. Lots of lights people in crazy cool clothes ( not as crazy as japan though), and just a lot of stuff going on. I walked by a building called partyworld which was like a 20 floor building with ONLY karaoke. Crazy. I wanna try it. My Chinese is pretty weak though, prolly needta sing English songs.

This is a cool building in ximen. Pretty old and designed and built by the Japanese when they controlled the island.

According to the wall street journal, Taipei has some of Asia's best coffee. They recommended Fong Da Coffee. I am a big coffee guy - black - no sugar- no milk. So I decided to try it. I got the most expensive cup 200 NT so like 6.50 US. It was a nice cup o coffee but for a supposedly premium "blue mountain number 1" blend it was somewhat lacking. Its texture was watery but not velvety. The taste was not weak but also not particularly strong and not very distinct. I wonder if the quality of the water had something to do with it. Anyway it was cool though since the shop used a special brewing and filtering process. I may go back and try a cheaper blend. If you happen to be going to Taipei the shop is Fong Da coffee at 42 Chengdu Rd. Tell them alex sent you and they will say ＂他是谁？＂

After that I met my Taiwanese friend and we went around to the lantern festival. We missed the first night but at least it was not as crowded when we went.

Apparently Spongebob squarepants is popular In Taiwan. After this we walked around and I evantually went back to sleep.

The next day I went to the palace museum. At a vending machine I saw an old Virginia favorite. Peanut soup. In a can!

Sometimes little things can mean a lot. Here are a few things I like.

Lightbling- a cool necklace I found in hong kong. Good for rock or rap.
Unintended side effect: reminds some of Harry potter.

Sunglasses. Actually quite cheap the design shines nonetheless.
Unintended side effect: looks like Julian Casablancas

What a cool guy.

Guitar pics. Actually I probably have around 100 or more of these in different colors sizes and shapes. When I was a kid I collected hats. Now- it's all about collecting these bad boys.
Unintended side effect: when you have hundreds it's always impossible to find exactly the one you are trying to find.

JS Wings! The coolest shoes from the Jeremy Scott X Adidas line. I wanted gold but only could get silver. Still great though.
Unintended side effect: Getting VIP treatment when you shop at Hérmes.

Bandanas! Great when you have long hair like me. Can also be used on hands / clothing.
Unintended side effect: being mistaken for Axl Rose.

Macau

I went to Macau today. Woke up late so I had to take a late ferry over. Was there by 5. Yoyo I'm sorry we should have met up! If it wasn't such a late decision (I didn't plan on going when I woke up). Anyway like I said I made a last minue decision to go to Macau... Nothing was happening in HK cause of Chinese new year.

Ferry ride over.

Went to the Grand Lisboa casino and played hold em. Had several bad hands early on and was almost knocked out but after several hours of work and waiting for the right hands I won all my money back and a small bit more. Stayed for a while but I decided I didn't wanna leave with a negative so I vowed to leave once I was back down to breaking even. After an hour I was back where I started.

I decided that since I had been playing for 5 hours I might as well stop... Plus I broke even so I figured it was a good time to quit.

The grand lisboa interior. If you were playing poker they would give you free drinks like coke or coffee ( which was pretty bad) or according to a good German player I met- beer. However for the strangest reasons he said you have to pay for diet coke.

One of the pros who plays there. I was pretty sure I saw him but can't be sure. I also think I met a famous Korean American pro player but didn't have much time for smalltalk as he left early.

On the ferry back.

All in all I'm glad that I went.

Ok. Great collection from Jeremy Scott in spring 2010.

These are an updated version of this shoe which last season was available in black and white. One of my friends has the black and white version and I must say it looked really great. It's a very cool shoe. I read some comments on some other blogs where people said the shoes were too flashy and no one could wear them unless they were " on stage rapping or dancing". Classic case of no confidence there. Anyone can pull off these shoes... They look so good. You should WANT to show people u have good enough taste to wear these.

This vest/jacket/Hoodie was actually worn by rihanna in the "Run this town" music video with Jay-Z and KanYe. (side note Lil Wayne did his own version over he RTT beat on his "No Ceilings" mixtape. Was cool.
Overall This is a cool piece which will probabaly unortunately not be as popular as it should do to it's nonstandard design.

Ah the JS silver loafers. Perfect for your silver 1960's jetsons robot going to work costume. Or just for fun. Actually I like these ones a lot but it is overshadowed by other pieces in the collection, so with a limited budget I would be unlikely to purchase these.

Here we have the main man himself. Jeremy Scott, proudly rocking his now famous JS Wings and some very tight bball shirts. That's right. Jeremy, this collection is a slam dunk.

Speaking of the JS Wings this season has two new colors. White with gold wings and multicolor. Both are fusions in a sense as both white and gold editions of this shoe have been released but never white AND gold- oh the excitement. And well multicolor is just a mix of everything.

I already have the silver edition of these shoes. Now, I have at least one friend who has promised me that she will buy the multicolored version. Better follow through!

Some interesting pants. Looks sorta like motocross gear or something. Still cool but not my favorite.

Now here is a cool one for all you spooky kids. Gothic style hoodie with cool spiky details.

Diamond shoes. To be honest I'm not a huge dan of these but I could imagine some people with a different style than mine rocking these.

Now the real question of this collection is. WHERE R THE CAVEMEN PANTS??? That's right. At the unveiling the models were decked out in flintstones style garb... Now the awesome cavemen pants are nowhere to be seen...

This picture just makes you wonder. "Why aren't they selling this?"

So all in all the spring 2010 JS collection is very good, but unfortunately lacking the cavemen pants. Best pick: the multicolor wing shoes. Honorable mention the yellow and silver high tops.

A couple of days ago I went to the Hong Kong launch party for an exclusive french Jewelry brand. It was quite cool. Really packed venue with lots of local Celebrities and people in the industry. Plus... there was free food!!

There were two harp players, playing mostly traditional classical music while the models walked in with some Jewelry. It as a good vibe for what they were promoting, but of course, I would have preferred something with a little more edge.

Everyone has ideals, images, beliefs, hopes of the way things are, or they should be.
My hometown is small, too small for me now. But, I have an idealized image of it and my childhood. Mostly, I look back at these things through music. Now, im listening to Counting Crows. Their music brings me a sense of simplicity, with some nostalgia. Similar to how I feel about my hometown. When I am here (As I will be for only 1 more day), I feel like I want to leave, because its too small. But the smallness, combined with my upbringing here, bring a small sense of nostalgia and feeling for the past.

I am not a very nostalgic person. I look to the future, and I don't want to repeat or relive the past. But its good to look back, especially when one is about to leave, and appreciate or at least acknowledge what has happened. And for me, the best way to do this is through music.

Recently I started writing a lot of letters to different people I have met. It's pretty fun. Honestly I used to hate writing letters but now I think its cool. Speaking of which- if you want a letter, even if I don't know you, I will send you one (seriously) if you leave your address in the comments. Also, I'm gonna update this blog more now. Thanks pengyou (you know who you are) for encouraging me to do so.

Rilakkuma (relax bear- a popular japanese cartoon)- this one looks a little evil though ;).

The friend who i tried to send this to says she didn't get it... which is highly annoying. Maybe the Japanese Post office is messed up? If you ask for a letter and don't get one in like a month tell me.

One day I suddenly decided to leave the dorms and just go downtown.... It turned out to be a good decision, as I walked into the middle of an Onsen Matsuri (festival). There was a huge parade thru the downtown area.

Me and my friend Ryohei bought the same crazy pants at this mall in Japan. We went around the dorms scaring people. We met Miyuki and took her as a hostage. Later, we rode the elevators. We would stand completely still and not smile, as we wore sunglasses. People would get into the elevators scared, laughing, or just plain uncertain about what was going on.

I've been in Chicago a couple days. It's a great city. It is quite cold, but it could be worse. There is a wide variety of restaurants. A lot of cool places to eat and a lot of stuff to do.

There are many rock and roll clubs, I'm gonna see some concerts if possible.

On the flight I took an overhead picture of my hometown. Small isn't it?

I have to wake up really early to get to the internship, since I am living in the suburbs. I need to take the train every day. It's cool though. Starbucks and Einsteins Bagels open early in the morning, so i can get coffee and some breakfast on the way in.

I cant see anything...

Jan 26, 2008. All morning i've been working on a song tentatively titled "we have no future". I hope to eventually release it in some form. I guess it has a little bit of a pop rock base but heavier than something like blink 182. I think it could be really good with some good production. Right now its just made on garageband so the quality is pretty shit. I also need to decide whether i do vocals or get someone else to do it. Wish me luck!!

The daughter of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is studying at a university in Hong Kong under an assumed name, a newspaper said Sunday.

Bona Mugabe, whose father and fellow leaders are banned from visiting the United States, the European Union and Australia, began studying at the University of Hong Kong last year, a senior university source told the Sunday Morning Post.

Her presence in the southern Chinese city was revealed after her 43-year-old mother, Grace Mugabe, allegedly assaulted a British photographer who tried to take photos of her outside a five-star Hong Kong hotel earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for the university said the presence of Bona Mugabe on campus had not given rise to any negative reaction from other students.

"We believe that education should be above politics and young people should not be denied the rights to education because of their family background or what their parents have done," the spokeswoman told the Post.

Australia last year deported eight Zimbabwean students whose parents are linked to President Mugabe's government, saying it wanted to prevent those involved in human rights abuses from giving their children education denied to ordinary Zimbabweans.

Mugabe's regime has been internationally condemned for its disregard of human rights and its politically motivated violence targeting opposition and civil activists. Nearly half the population of Zimbabwe is dependent on food aid while a cholera epidemic has claimed more than 2,700 lives.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong police said they were still investigating the alleged assault on photographer Richard Jones by Zimbabwe's first lady on January 15.

"No one has been arrested yet," a spokesman told AFP.

Jones said he had been repeatedly beaten and punched by Grace Mugabe while her bodyguard held him outside the Kowloon Shangri-la Hotel. He said he had sustained numerous bruises, cuts, and abrasions to his head and face because Grace Mugabe was wearing diamond rings when she attacked him.

At the lock up in Tokyo. In this restaurant Gothic girls handcuff you and then bring you to your prison cell, where you can order food. All of the drinks come in vials or even syringes, and look like blood or wierd chemicals. About halfway thru your dinner a monster comes in and attacks you while the entire restaurant goes dark and the soundsystem goes into overdrive with screams and crashes. This place is a must visit if you find yourself in Tokyo. I went to the beach with Kon, and it happened to be on the same day as some Indian festival. Guess HK has a large indian community. Apparently part of the festival is to cover yourself in purple powder- We decided to join the indians in celebrating, and they covered us!

One project for HKU was was to represent Saudi Arabia in a model UN. As the leader of the group, I gave the presentation in traditional Saudi Garb.

2008 Music Recap

Wow. 2008 is almost over. Its been a good year in music.

Early in the year, I was listening to a lot of Weezer, and I believe The Strokes had a brief comeback on my frequently played items.

I also listened to a lot of My Chemical Romance. Especially while working out. Before they got rid of the good bike machines at HKU, I used to bike super fast while listening to Hang Em High by MCR.

(I also saw a couple Beijing Indie Rock bands play in July, before the olympics) One, Hedgehog, was really awesome.

But of course, the real music obsession of 2008 was Guns N Roses. While most of their material was released years ago, I never had listened to it seriously before 2008. It started over the summer, and I have to say I became quite addicted. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Nightrain, Estranged, November Rain... all these classic songs I had never listened to before. What a shame, at least I've started now.

Most of you guys will know Chinese Democracy came out this year. The over 15 years in the making over 15 Million US Dollar album. Banned in China, I was quite happy to be able to buy it in Hong Kong, the only place in China (save maybe macau) where it is sold. It is a very good album, with rich layers of music. At times there are 5 guitars, an orchestra, pianos and other instruments all playing at once. Not to mention Axl's classic voice, which alone equals the power of those all those instruments.

Assuming I did music awards, I would have to say it is the album of the year.

In my world musically, I got a lot better at guitar, and wrote many of my own songs. Well, I use the term songs loosely as they are mostly chord progressions and guitar riffs. Few have lyrics.

I hope to start a Japanese Rock Band once I get to Japan.

Lap Chee Tsui

In an amusing turn of events, the Vice Chancellor of HKU has poster standees of himself all over campus. I decided to get a couple pictures with him.

I think Lap Chee Tsui has an amazing modeling ability. Hes able to keep the same pose constantly. His arm must be so tired!

Our dear vice chancellor, lonely without me to take pictures with him.... Don't worry. We will meet again!!!

Wow. Things are crazy these days. HKU is giving me so much work. Just finished a 3,000 word essay.

Luckily, I did have some time to help my friend who is a photography student complete his project. I was honored to be in his project, along with a girl named Sokhna from France, who is actually a much better model than me.

This is Sokhna. Isn't she beautiful?

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this. From Chow Kar Hoo to Sokhna to Robert to all of the cute girls who helped during the photo shoot. Also I would like to thank Guns N Roses, who provided the soundtrack for much of this shoot.

There will be a round Two (maybe round 3 even? ) with Color. Keep checking and stay true!

This Sunday while I was doing a group project there was some sort of cosplay festival at HKU. I got a lot of pictures with people there!

It was crazy..... Really cool though. Some people would make fun of people who dress up like cartoon characters but I think its great. If you like Anime, why not imagine you are in it? I think people who judge others based on their tastes are lame. Just because you dont like it doesn't give you a right to make fun of these people. If you wanna do it, do it. Don't worry about what others think.

If you worry what others think about you, you should worry more about what you think of yourself.

Life in the past few days

Been a while- a lot of stuff has happened over the few days. I have been super busy, but I've been able to have a lot of fun between the margins. My dad just visited for a day so that was great.

This week I had. 3 project presentations, 1 debate, and one policy presentation, one band performance, and a lot of good food.

After my project on tuesday I went with Kon to IFC. Citysuper in IFC is great... It has food from all over the world.
I thought that this packaging was really cool. I think it is for some Japanese Candy. Moustaches are back in style!

Kon joined the game too. Pretty awesome!

Later we Went to "Cafe Vergnano". This is a pretty cool place which for some reason is obsessed with telling you that it was founded in 1882. (Check Kon's Coffee). Anyway, I ordered a sandwich and he ordered a cappuchino and spaghetti.

My sandwich was already prepared and all they had to do was heat it up. They had to cook his sphagetti and then mix the sauce and meat. For some reason, my sandwich arrived after 30 minutes... 10 minutes after Kon had already got his pasta. After Kon got his pasta, they said "I will bring you your sandwich now". Then 5 minutes later, I saw them take the sandwich out of the display case and just then begin to heat it up! This is 25 minutes after ordering.....
Then 5 minutes later I got my sandwich, after what must have been the weakest toast job ever, because it was cold.

I would say that place just sucks, but Kon's food was served to him fast and efficiently, yet mine was amazingly slow and messed up. I think the waitress hates me for some reason. (Too awesome for her?)

Moral of the story, their service is old, outdated, and needs to be updated. Now 1882 makes a lot more sense.

HKU Band Show,

Yesterday I played in the HKU Joint Hall Bandshow. I played in Living on a Prayer, and Beautiful Love. Thanks to my good friend patrick I got some pictures. Things went really well, but it was a crazy day. I had a project that morning, then i literally ran to the show, made it just in time, played a few songs, then ran and gave a presentation on UN Security Council Reform.

Even though the day was so crazy, I liked it a lot. I felt like I was doing something with my life. Getting a lot of stuff done. It felt productive.

Things went quite well and I was very pleased with our performance. And, I didn't mess up the guitar solo (my biggest fear).

Everyone! We had a Bass player, Several vocalists, Piano, Guitar, and Drums.

A Taste of Whats to Come

Wow. This day is crazy. Its not even over yet. I just performed at the HKU band show, for the St Johns hall band. Also did 2 project presentations, and there is still one more to go today!

The band show went well, I'll talk about it more later though, when i can post some pictures too.

Over the weekend my friend Janice brought her camera around and we got some good pictures.

This is a crazy crazy week. I have a band show tonight, I have 2 presentations on tuesday, a chinese test and paper on wednesday and a presentation on Friday.

For the band show I am playing in the Band for St Johns. I didn't get to choose the songs but some are cool. Playing Beautiful love, by some Chinese singer, Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, and Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. I am playing electric Guitar.

Recent Events at HKU

Exam time is around the corner.... and now its group project time. Totally lame. Spending all day working in rooms with various percentages of group members showing up. But luckily HKU isn't all about work (only 95%...) sometimes random stuff happens too.

Like one day when a basketball team just took over the central square near the library. They actually kept missing shots. hahahaha
There was also a Joint University Dance competition. Pretty cool... mostly for the outfits. Got some good styles here.

Kids from Poly U. Pretty nice university actually. The first post on this blog is about an air race that happened at Poly U. Neon was a good choice.

Christmas is Coming

Over here in Hong Kong, you don't get the usual hints that christmas is rolling in.
The weather is still warm, almost good enough for the beach. The sky is still bright and the days still feel long. There is no chill in the breeze, the changing of the colors of the trees I used to love so much in my native Virginia.

So, There is only one thing that can tell you Christmas is coming. Consumerism.

The Starbucks Red Cups are awesome. Now you can drink your ginger latte, imagining being cold, while you look outside and the sun is shining.

The elaborate decorations at the malls in hong kong are another sight to behold. With snowflakes, trees, and santa clauses all sparling, it really is a sight to behold. I will upload some pictures of that later.

Now, a lot of people have complained about consumerism over the years, but I think its great. No one is forcing you to buy these products, and its always nice to have little touches of christmas on the coffee cup you would buy anyway.

Afraid

Afraid: A short story

Before I moved to Hong Kong, I was afraid of roaches. Probably a societal thing... everyone's afraid of them in movies, so you are conditioned to be afraid too. Since I live in a big city, i occasionally see them on the street (thank god never in my apt). I used to not like it, I would try to kill them but in a really afraid way.. not striking hard enough with my shoe. Sometimes they would get away.

Then I thought.

What does it say about you if you are too afraid to kill a roach? Its a bug. You are a human. You are so much higher on the food chain- to be afraid of a roach... its ridiculous. So, I started to conquer my fears, being sure to kill them every time I saw them.

Moral of the story. Don't let unimportant things scare you. And wear boots.

New Music~

This fall is a great, great time for new music around the world. New albums from Kanye West, the Killers, and Guns N Roses are coming.

Kanye West's new album 808's and Heartbreak is the follow up to Graduation. Unlike Graduation this album features almost no rapping, mostly using an Autotune.

Here is a leak of heartless

Guns N Roses are releasing their first new album in over 15 years. At a cost of over 15 million dollars this is the most expensive album ever made. Some songs have been leaked. This is the blues, one of the best songs on the new album.

The Killers also have a new album coming out. "Day and Age" Their first single, Human, is quite good, but the lyrics are almost comically meaningless. Flowers asks "Are we human, or are we dancer?" What does that even mean?

Anyway here is the song.

This is gonna be a great, great few months for music!

US ELECTION PARTY

Nov 4th 2008. The day that changed the world forever.

Since i'm over here in Hong Kong, I woke up early on the morning of the 5th and went to a party to watch the results. Hosted by The American Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by CNN, it was great.

Halloween

For Halloween I spent the night in Lan Kwai Fong.

First, my friends and I got some dinner at the IFC mall, then we went down to LKF.

The line to get in was soooo long....

I took A LOT of pictures. Probably about 500 if you include pictures I took with others on their cameras. At times there were lines of people trying to take pictures with me. I guess people thought my costume was cool.

There were swarms of photographers.

That was a great Harry Potter Costume.

The Red Bull Air Race Finals!

Recently I was a contestant at the Red Bull RC Air Race finals! It was a great experience and I met a lot of great people. It was a thrilling remote control race of epic proportions. The stakes were high as the winner of the Air race got a free trip to Abu Dhabi to watch the Red Bull air race world series race.

I came into the race with visions of being the next red baron, the legendary german flying ace who is said to have been the best pilot of his time. It turns out my dream came true-- although not in the way I imagined. Just like the red baron, my plane crashed and my dreams of aerial superiority were crushed forever.

The Course was made up of several large cones. Each racer had to fly their small remote control plane around the cones as fast as possible, with as few crashes as possible. It was hard! I placed 3rd at the qualification round, but unfortunately did not win any prizes at the finals.

At the finals I sped through the first half of the course only to crash at the most difficult turn.

It was great to meet a lot of new people at the Red Bull air race. I met one guy in fashion design, a previous winner, and many redbull employees. These are seriously cool people. I even asked for a job at redbull but apparently they only hire attractive girls. Kon got a picture with one of the redbull girls!

We were only flying RC planes, but this is a video of the real deal. The winner of the race got to go to Abu Dhabi to see this. So badass!
